Journalist's daughter found dead at Dhaka house

The police have recovered the body of a late journalist Aktarul Alam's daughter with her hands and feet tied up from her house in the capital's Rampura area on Friday. The deceased is Fahmida Akhter Nipun, 45. Officer-in-Charge Mabubur Rahman Tarafder of Rampura police station told the Dhaka Tribune: “The domestic help of Nipun's house first noticed the body and informed the locals. Later, the police rushed in and recovered it in the morning.” “Her hands and feet were tied up with rope and her throat asphyxiated with muffler. We are suspecting that she might have been strangled.”

 

4 betel leaf traders killed in road accident

At least four betel leaf traders have been killed and four others injured when a truck ran a betel leaf-laden tempo over on Jhenaidah-Kushtia Highway in the district on Friday morning. The deceased are-- Safiuddin, 35, Mazibar Rahman, 37, Reazul Islam, 40, of Kanapukuria village under Sailkupa upazila and Aminul Islam Amal, 35, of Charpara village under Harinakundu upazila in Jhenaidah. The injured were rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Of the injured, the conditions of two injured were stated to be critical.

 

Jaishankar new Indian foreign secretary

S Jaishankar today took charge as Indian foreign secretary, replacing Sujatha Singh whose tenure was abruptly "curtailed" on Wednesday night, a move which evoked a sharp reaction from the Congress. "My priorities are the government's priorities. So, I think at this time let's leave it at that.... This is a big responsibility. I would say that I am very honoured that I have been assigned this responsibility," said Jaishankar, a 1977-batch IFS officer, when asked about his sudden appointment. Sujatha was not present when Jaishankar took charge at the South Block office. Jaishankar will have a two-year tenure as per rules.

 

 

Simultaneous attacks in Egypt's Sinai kill 26

Militants struck more than a dozen army and police targets in the restive Sinai Peninsula with simultaneous attacks involving a car bomb and mortar rounds on Thursday, killing at least 26 security officers. An Army spokesman immediately blamed former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood of orchestrating the attack, which killed 25 Army soldiers and one policeman.

The wide-ranging attacks late Thursday required a previously unseen level of coordination. At least one car bomb was set off outside a military base, while mortars were simultaneously fired at the base, toppling some buildings and leaving soldiers buried under the debris, official said.

 

Bus set afire in Old Dhaka

A half-packed passenger bus has been set afire by unidentified miscreants in the Old Dhaka's Tantibazar area on Friday morning. According to the survivors, the Abdullahpur-bound bus of Victor Paribahan came under the arson attack at Tantibazar intersection around 8:30am. However, the passengers managed to get down from it immediately after the attack was crried out, said police control room officials.
