Sudden rain increases winter woes

Update : 17 Jan 2015, 05:08 AM

Commuters in Dhaka along with other parts of the country have been suffering a lot due to the sudden winter rain coupled with cold wind that hit some parts of the country on Friday night.

The sudden downpour is the result of a depression which formed in the Bay of Bengal few days ago.

According to the met office, the rain mainly occurred in the country’s southern and northern parts breaking the record of average rainfall in the season in most places.

People from all walks of life, especially those, who work on the streets, are the worst sufferers of the inclement weather.

One Azad, a street vendor, told the Dhaka Tribune: “I could not open my street shop due to the rain. Besides, some of my goods got wet last night.”

Farid, a day labourer, who is working on the metro-rail project, said: “I am working despite the rainfall. Although it is not so heavy, I am suffering a lot because of the cold wind.”

The lowest temperature was recorded at 14.5 degrees Celsius while rainfall was 2 millimetres in Dhaka on Friday night, said Dhaka Met Office.

Adbur Rahman, meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorology Department told the Dhaka Tribune that they had recorded 15 millimetres of rainfall in Dinajpur, 13 millimetres in Syedpur and 8 millimetres of rainfall in Rangpur on Friday while average rainfall record in the region in this time of the year is only 8 millimetres.

Citing the ‘well marked low/depression’ as the cause of such kind of irregular heavy rainfall in the winter, he also said the temperature had increased because of this.

He further said the rain would cease from today as the depression had already lost it gravity and pace and was getting dissolved in the air.

Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong divisions and the region of Faridpur. The weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.

Moderate to thick fog may occur over the river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country during midnight till morning.

Night temperature may rise slightly and day temperature may fall by 1-2°C over the country.

The Met office said the temperature would decrease within next two or three days bringing in a mild cold wave for few days.

It also anticipated that at least one moderate to severe cold wave would hit the country in the last week of the month.
