Eid-e-Miladunnabi was observed in the country and throughout the Muslim world on Sunday, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SM).
To celebrate the occasion, religious, socio-political and cultural organisations chalked out various programmes in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
Islamic Foundation Bangladesh also organized various programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
Muslims across the country joined special prayers and staging colourful street marches to mark the day, which is also the day of 'ofat (departure)' of the Prophet (SM).
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, other private television channels, and radio stations aired special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Leader Rawshan Ershad and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued separate messages on the occasion greeting the country’s people and Muslims across the world.
On this day in 570, the 12th of Rabiul Awal of the Hijri calendar, the Prophet was born in Makkah in Saudi Arabia with divine blessings and messages of peace for mankind. He also passed away on the same day.
The day is a public holiday.
