CPD: Low private investment hinders growth

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has said low private investment hinders economy from attaining a higher growth of about 8%, which is often said to be a primary requirement for turning into a middle income country.

While 6% economic growth, commendable as it is, has become a regular phenomenon, the think tank said there are several other factors that hinder a higher rate of growth.

BNP: Govt to be liable for any untoward situation

BNP Publication and Publicity Secretary Zainul Abdin Farroque has said the government will be responsible if any untoward situation takes place during January 5 rally.

A BNP delegation led by Farroque went to DMP office on Saturday morning to seek permission for holding rally on January 5. But they failed to meet any DMP official.

CU shuttle trains halted due to BCL blockade

Shuttle train service in Chittagong University has been suspended because of the nonstop blockade called by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at the university unit.

Varsity Express (VX), a shuttle train based group of Chhatra League enforced nonstop blockade at the university to press home their six-point demand.

Smuggled coal, Indian wood seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), in separate drives, have seized two tons of smuggled coal and Indian woods from the district's Tahirpur and Doarabazar upazila.

Sunamganj BGB 8 Operational Officer Major Kamaruzzaman said the woods were worth of Tk14, 000.

51 BNP-Shibir men held in Jessore

Police have detained 51 activists of BNP and Jamaat's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in a special drive in the district.

The identities of the detainees could not be known immediately.

US slaps more sanctions on North Korea after Sony hack

North Korea was hit with more sanctions on Friday designed to impede access to the US financial system in the wake of a cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, which the Obama Administration has said was supported by the reclusive country.

The US government named three entities, including North Korea's military intelligence agency, and sanctioned 10 people with links to weapons sales and proliferation.

Indonesia finds two 'large objects' in AirAsia jet hunt

Ships searching for the wreck of an AirAsia passenger jet that crashed with 162 people on board have pinpointed two "big objects" on the sea floor, the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency said on Saturday.

The Airbus (AIR.PA) A320-200 plunged into the Java Sea on Sunday while en route from Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya to Singapore. No survivors have been found.
