Pay hike proposed for Armed Forces

Update : 01 Jan 2015, 07:40 PM

In a pay rise proposal similar to that for the civil servants, the government has been recommended to implement significant raises to the salaries of Armed Forces personnel.

The eight-member Armed Forces Pay Committee, led by its chairman Lt Gen Anwar Hossain, submitted its recommendations yesterday to Finance Minister AMA Muhith at his secretariat office.

According to the recommendations, there would be 16 grades in the pay scale, with the lowest monthly salary for non-combatant enrolment or civil administration staff being Tk8,200; while the highest salary would be Tk100,000 for a general. A major general would get Tk84,000 and a lieutenant general would get Tk88,000 per month.

Lt Gen Anwar, chairman of the committee, said: “We have taken grassroots organisations’ recommendations on salary, allowance, pension and other benefits. Besides, the Armed Forces Pay Committee also met the National Pay and Services Commission several times over the past year.”

The committee recommended a vertical scale of calculation for the junior commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers, while salaries of major general and second lieutenant would be fixed similar to the national pay commission recommendations, he said.

Besides, the salaries of the FLS officials and staffs have been recommended to match the grades under Armed Forces Nursing Services Act 1952. Special allowances has also been recommended for commanders, para-commanders, paratroopers, and snipers.

It was also recommended that rent allowance stay the same even for the personnel stationed at remote areas of the country.

Asked how much money would be required to implement the proposed scale, Finance Minister Muhith said it would be similar to the raise that was made the last time.

There are currently 183,851 personnel working under the Armed Forces.
