Fresh efforts 'to rescue' Ziad
The members of Fire Service and Civil Defence have begun their fresh efforts to rescue the four-year-old Ziad despite the announcement by State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan that none has been trapped inside the abandoned 600-ft deep water pump pipe.
The rescuers have made an iron cage, which would be used for taking the ill-fated boy out of the 600-ft hole, reported several private television channels.
Hartal underway peacefully in Gazipur
The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, protesting the ban in any type of gathering imposed by the district administration, is underway peacefully.
The hartal began at 6am and would continue till 6pm on Saturday.
Dense fog disrupts flights in Chittagong
The regular flight operations at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong have been disrupted due to dense fog.
Wing Commander Nur-E-Alam, manager of the airport, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Two international flights from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah could not land at the airport in the morning due to the dense fog. The flights were scheduled to stop in Chittagong en route to Dhaka. Later, those landed at Shahjalal International airport in Dhaka.”
Chinese foreign minister arrives today
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrives here this evening on a three-day official visit at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart AH Mahmood Ali aimed at further boosting bilateral relations between the two countries.
Wang Yi is scheduled to land at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6.40 pm today, a senior official of the foreign ministry told BSS.
Indian liquor, smuggled coal seized
The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have seized 46 bottles of Indian liquor and 3.5 tons of smuggled coal from the district's Bishambhupur upazila on Saturday.
Sunamganj BGB 8 Operational Officer Major Kamaruzzaman said: “The BGB members seized 46 bottles of Indian liquor and 3.5 tons of smuggled coal in an abandoned state, conducting a drive at Lamapara village in the morning.”
Extreme cold disrupts normal life
Shivering cold coupled with dense fog paralysed life across the country as temperature sharply fell in most places today, a meteorologist told BSS.
Mild cold wave is sweeping over the regions of Pabna, Jessore and Kushtia and it may continue, a weather bulletin of Met Office today said.
