A year has elapsed since unidentified assailants entering a house in the capital’s Gopibagh area slaughtered six people but the mystery behind the murders are yet to be unearthed.
Given the sensitivity of the case the investigation charge was handed over to Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on December 22 last year, just a day after the murders.
DB police have so far arrested four Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) men in the case. The arrestees were taken remands in two phases but to no avail.
Asked, Jahangir Hossain Matubbor, deputy commissioner of DB (East) police, said investigation into the cases is under way but there had been no major development yet.
About the four arrested JMB members he said they had gleaned some information from the arrestees.
“It is taking time as the killers were professional. They rarely left any clue behind but we are doing our level best,” added DC Jahangir.
Earlier on December 21 of 2013 so-called spiritual leader Lutfar Rahman Faruk, 60, was killed at his rented house on the 64/6 Ramkrishna Mission Road of Gopibagh.
Along with Faruk, assailants also killed five more persons in the house identified as Sarowar Islam Faruk, Shahin, Mujibor, Manjurul Alam and Rasel Bhuyan.
Just a day after the incident, Lutfar’s son Abdullah Al-Faruk, filed a case against 10 to 12 unidentified assailants with Wari police station.
Investigators, soon after the murder started investigation, centring three clues – family conflicts, property and Islamist extremist groups.
Based on the third clue Investigation Officer and Inspector of DB Police Abul Khayer on September 16 showed four JMB members arrested who were already in the jail in a previously filed case with Ramna police station.
The arrestees were identified as Golam Sarowar Rahat, Azmir Amit, Sayed Ziaul Islam Jitu and Al-Amin.
Inspector Abul Kahyer said: “We have not been able to make any major breakthrough in unearthing evidence but we got some information that might help us hunting down the perpetrators.”
Abdullah Al-Faruk, son of slain Lutfar expressed his dissatisfaction over the investigation process.
“It is really painful that police have failed to make any progress in the case, Faruk, told the Dhaka Tribune, yesterday.
Faruk also blamed the investigators for their negligence in finding out the criminals.
