The Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (Demu) train service from Tongi to Kamalapur was inaugurated at Tongi Railway Station yesterday morning.
Chief guest Railway Minister Mojibul Haque inaugurated the service in a programme at Tongi Railway Station around 7:40am.
“The Railway ministry has drawn up a plan incorporating some projects. When the projects would be implemented, there will be an excellent change in rail service in the country,” said the railway minister. “When the government is trying to develop railway, the BNP along with Jamaat is trying to destroy the sector,” he said.
Director General of the Bangladesh Railway Tofazzal Ahmed said two more rail lines would be set up from Tongi to Dhaka soon and the present rail lines would be modernised.
Station master of the Kamalapur Railway Station Abdul Mazid said the demo train would travel on the Dhaka-Tongi route twice a day.
A train will leave Kamalapur railway station at 5:25am and arrive in Tongi station at 6:10 am while another train will leave Tongi railway station at 7:40 am and arrive at Kamalapur railway station at 8:35 am.
The demo train with six compartments will travel with six hundred passengers at a time, Mazid also added.
He also expressed hope that the service would reduce travel- trouble after the start of this demo train on Tongi-Kamalapur railway route.
Acting Secretary of Railway Ministry Monsur Ali Sikder presided over the inaugural session addressed among others by former parliament member and commander of Gazipur district Muktijoddha Command Council Kazi Mozammel Haque, General Manager of the Bangladesh Railway (eastern zone) Mozammel Haque.
