Former minister and Awami League leader Abdul Latif Siddique has gone to the High Court to seek anticipatory bail in a dozen of cases filed for hurting religious sentiment, his lawyer has said.
"The former minister came to the High Court to file anticipatory bail petition," Somoy TV quoted Latif's lawyer Nurul Islam Sujon.
However, Latif's lawyer denied the claim hour after he had confirmed that Latif was on the court premises at that time.
Earlier, Latif returned to country on Sunday night amid warrants for his arrest.
Upon his arrival at the airport’s VIP lounge he was kept under surveillance of immigration police.
Later, the police let him go around 9:30pm.
A total of four arrest warrants have so far been issued by different Dhaka courts against Latif Siddique for hurting the countrymen’s religious sentiment by making controversial remarks on hajj and Tablig.
On September 28, during a programme in the USA, Latif Siddique made derogatory comments on hajj, ijtema and PM’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
At the programme organised by the Tangail Samity at a hotel in New York, Latif said he was against hajj and Tabligh Jamaat more than he was against Jamaat-e-Islami.
