Law minister satisfied with verdict

Update : 29 Oct 2014, 07:59 AM

Law Minister Anisul Haque has expressed satisfaction with the trial process and the death sentence handed down to Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.

In an immediate reaction at his secretariat office on Wednesday, Anisul said the verdict reflected people’s expectations.

“The tribunal has given judgment considering all the available evidences. He [Nizami] deserves death penalty for killing the intellectuals,” Anisul said.

“The government will take every possible step to execute the verdict as soon as possible.”

The tribunal finished the trial maintaining transparency, neutrality and international standards, the law minister claimed.

Both defence and prosecution got the chance to examine the witnesses, he said adding the government has nothing to do with the adjudicatory process.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami has been sentenced to death for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chairman of the three-member International Crimes Tribunal 1, delivered the much-delayed verdict at 12:20pm on Wednesday.
