Twelve least developed countries (LDCs) will start a three-day regional meeting in Dhaka from today to recommend a strategy to deal with fund deficit.
Proper utilisation and mobilisation of financial resources both from domestic and foreign countries, and source of funding will come up for discussion.
Some 55 policymakers and senior officials from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Solomon Islands, Timore-leste (East Timor), Tuvalu and Vanuatu and relevant stakeholders will participate in the meeting titled “Financing Graduation Gaps of the Asia-Pacific Least Development Countries.”
Finance minister AMA Muhith is expected to inaugurate the meeting at Sonargoan Hotel, jointly arranged by Economic Relations Division (ERD), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
“The meeting will find out a strategy on estimating and identifying financial resources, concrete technical assistance and financing requirements,” said ERD Secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin while briefing about details of the meeting to the press at the ERD yesterday.
He said it will discuss on setting a criteria for graduation including the review and reporting process conducted by Committee for Development Policy of the UNDESA, identifying the concrete measures and institutional mechanisms for proper utilisation of the resources and recommend key policy measures to support resource mobilisation.
On behalf of Bangladesh, Mejbahuddin will led the 31-memebr delegation comprising representatives from different ministries and divisions having functional relevance with the LDC issues.
Besides the official delegates, policy makers and senior government officials, experts and think tanks from Bangladesh and other LDCs and also from UNESCAP, UNDESA and other UN offices, agencies and organisations will participate in the meeting.
The meeting has been divided in seven working sessions each having a specific topic.
