Fair compensation for Rana Plaza victims demanded

Update : 24 Oct 2014, 07:08 PM

Workers of Rana Plaza staged a rally and formed a human chain in the capital yesterday demanding compensation for the families of the survivors and victims.

Around 100 workers gathered in front of the National Press Club yesterday.

Nazma Akhter, president of United Garment Workers Federation, said victims of collapsed Rana Plaza building did not get fair compensation until now, one and half years to the disaster.

Some serious injured survivors are living subhuman conditions as they were not rehabilitated as yet, she said.

While speaking, other leaders said that a Rana Plaza trust fund has been formed, but the $40m that is required for compensation of these victims is yet to be provided by the government, buyers, owners and the BGMEA.

They urged the government to follow the ILO convention in providing compensation.

Meanwhile, different organisations working for the rights of garment workers held a rally at the Rana Plaza site demanding initiatives to provide immediate compensation to victims.

Speakers at the rally said although 1,700 people were killed in the Rana Plaza collapse, the government compensated only 332 people.

They said it has been one and half years since the Rana Plaza collapsed on April 25, 2013, but a total of 158

workers of the building still remained missing and government did not provide any compensation to their family members.

The Textile Garments Workers Federation and the Garments Shramik Front organised the rally marking 18th months of the disaster.
