Loko Natyadal will stage its popular production “Konjus” (The Miser) for the 650th time at the National Theatre Hall of the Shilpakala Academy today, at 7pm.
Based on playwright Molière’s world famous satirical comedy, “Konjus” has been adapted and scripted by Tariq Anam Khan while Liaquat Ali Lucky has been directing the play since its première in 1988.
The story of Konjus is about a 60-year-old miserly person, Haider Ali, who does not wish to spend even for his own son Kazim and daughter Laili. He has a huge amount of money hidden in a pot in his garden. Kazim is in love with neighbour Marjina, while Laili is in a relationship with Bodiuzzaman, son of Haider’s friend Aslam Beg.
The plot of the play reaches a climax when Haider Ali plans to marry Marjina himself. Meanwhile, another dramatic situation is created when Haider Ali’s hidden money gets stolen and Kala Mia, Haider’s cook and rickshaw-puller, puts false blame on Bodiuzzaman.
The course of event leads Haider Ali to yield to his children’s choices. However, he only surrenders when Aslam Beg agrees to pay all the expenditure of the marriages.
