The Director of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) has directed five students to fill a Rs1 lakh bond, of whom two are from Bangladesh, as named in the probe report after a bloody clash between foreign students from Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The three others were from Afghanistan.
The incident took place a couple of days ago when director Appu Kuttan was in Delhi. During the fight, students broke window glasses and also damaged other properties of the institute.
About the raging complaint registered by a student of the architecture branch, MANIT authorities referred the issue to the proctorial committee. A committee was set up to probe the matter after the incident took place in a hostel of the institute.
After returning from Delhi, director Appu Kuttan talked to students of the mechanical branch about the issue. However, students were not ready to name those involved in the fight.
As students were not ready to disclose names of the students who were involved in the fight and property damage, the director decided to impose fines on all students belonging to the mechanical branch living in the hostel where the fight took place. The director said he had no other choice as students kept mum on the issue.
Fed-up of regular fights among students in the hostels, the authorities of MANIT imposed collective punishments. After the fight, MANIT imposed a Rs 300 each fine on 200 students.
Sources said the director has said that he will impose such fines in the future too, if the students fail to disclose names of vandals.
