Holidaymakers experienced profound distress and sufferings on their journey home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha due to long tailback on different highways.
Our Tangail Correspondent reports: An 80-km tailback has created on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, causing immense sufferings to the passengers, especially women and children.
Cattle traders were also seen stuck in the tailback that stretched from Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district on Friday.
Elenga highway police outpost sergeant Kamruzzaman Raj said: “The tailback was created on the roads from Chandra in Kaliakoir uapzila to Elenga in Kalihati upazila in the early hours, keeping several thousand vehicles stranded.”
“It took place due to heavy pressure of vehicles, including cattle-laden trucks, on the highway.”
However, the gridlock was seen to have started easing after 8am.
Our Gazipur Correspondent said: “A 20-km tailback has created on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway from Gazipur’s Kaliakoir to Konabarhi.
Gazipur Traffic Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “The tailback occurred as some sacrificial animal-laden vehicles fell victims of road accident at different points of the highway.”
“Hundreds of vehicles, especially animal-laden trucks, from branch roads are moving towards the highway. That can be another reason behind the gridlock.”
Homebound travellers suffered to no end as traffic congestion continued from morning until 9pm on Thursday, he added.
Our Munshiganj Correspondent reported that a 12 km tailback has created on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway on Friday morning.
More than 2000 vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the highway since the morning.
Vaberchar highway police camp In-Charge Saiful Islam said: “The long tailback started from Meghna bridge at Tetoitola of Gazaria upazila and ended at Pakhi point of Boushia near Meghna-Gomati bridge.”
Our Feni Correspondent said: "A 22-km tailback created from Dhumghat Bridge to Mohammadpur Bazar on the highway since 11am on Friday."
Feni Mahipal Highway police station In-charge Saleh Ahmed said: "The gridlock occurred as several hundreds vahicles carrying the homebound people are moving towards the highway."
