Only 10% buildings follow building code

Update : 24 Sep 2014, 02:50 PM

Only 10% buildings are constructed following the national building code, former advisor to the caretaker government Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury has said.

He apprehended that a catastrophic disaster is likely to occur as Bangladesh is vulnerable to earthquake.

He made this observation while speaking as the chief guest at an orientation workshop on 'Incorporating Earthquake Resilient Feature in Engineering and Technological University Curriculum' at UGC auditorium in the capital on Wednesday.

Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor of University of Asia Pacific, said the number of multi-storied buildings is increasing day by day in the country due to rapid urbanisation.

In this regard, the house owners don't consult the concerned experts.

Side by side, the engineers don't concentrate on earthquake resilient feature with regards to designing buildings.

So, incorporating earthquake resilient feature in the course curricula of the concerned disciplines of engineering and technological universities is the demand of the day, he observed.

UGC Chairman, In-charge, Prof Dr Atful Hye Shibly presided over the workshop.

Shabel Firuz, Country Director, Islamic Relief, Bangladesh was the Special Guest on the occasion.

Prof Dr Mehedi Ahmed Ansary, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET, presented the key-note paper at the workshop while UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled gave the welcome address.
