Recent flood kills 14 people

Around 14 people and 14,500 domesticated animals were killed in the recent flood across the country while 972 educational and religious institutions, and harvests of around 4.5 lakh acres of land were damaged.

Around 25 lakh people in 94 upazilas under 19 districts were affected by the flood. Among them the number of extremely destitute families is 66,522, while the number stands at 314,334 for individuals.

A total of 233,504 houses accommodating around 534,009 families were damaged during the flood, according to the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC) of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry.

Considering the massive damages, the ministry has taken a plan to provide foods to the victims under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme.

Special allocations under Test Relief (TR) programme will be made to repair the damaged infrastructures across the country, the officials of the ministry told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The Agriculture Ministry is also planning to supply seeds, fertilisers and special incentives to the farmers affected by flood to cultivate lands during the dry season to recover the loss.

Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury said the government would start the special programmes for the victims after the flood is over.

“A fresh 40 days employment programme will be taken for the people who lost their livelihood in flood affected area. They will be paid for taking part in repairing damaged roads, dams and various infrastructures across the country,” Maya added.

According to the NDRCC, around 3,330 sq km of area in 433 unions have been damaged while around 1,752 km of roads, 659 km of dams and 24 culverts were damaged in the flood.

Among the dead, seven died in Bogra, four in Jamalpur and three in Rajbari.

According to the ministry, the government has already allocated 7,200 metric tonnes of rice and Tk1.44 crore as Gratuitous Relief (GR) for the flood victims.
