The Resistance Day For Repression Against Women is being observed commemorating the 19th anniversary into Yeasmin killing.
Yeasmin Akhter, 14, who worked as a domestic worker in Dhaka was gang-raped and subsequently killed by some unruly police personnel in Dinajpur on this day in 1995.
Since 1996, August 24 has been observed as the Resistance Day For Repression Against Women.
Three policemen, assistant sub inspector Mainul Islam, constable Abdus Sattar and pickup van driver Amrit Lal had been hanged till death following a court order on August 31 in 2007 in the case filed at Kotwali Police Station in this regard.
People from all strata of life took to the streets in Dinajpur in protest against the brutality and police opened fire on them in which seven persons including Samu, Siraj and Quader had been killed. Since then, this day is being observed as Women Repression Prevention Day.
To mark the day, different socio-cultural organisations including Mahila Parishad, Balubari Women Development Association and Palla Sree have chalked out elaborate programme.
The programmes include placing wreaths at the grave of Yeasmin, holding discussions, day-long doa mahfil and special prayer, according to the state-run news agency BSS.
Quran khani and milad mahfil will also be held at the village of Yeasmin in Dinajpur.
