The rules and regulations of “Breast Milk Substitutes (Regulation of Marketing) Act 2013" will be finalised within the next month, Health Secretary MM Niazuddin has said.
The health ministry has made the decision following a meeting marking the "World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August)" at the ministry on Tuesday.
The health secretary briefed the media after the meeting.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has urged the media to promote the issue in the breastfeeding week.
He said: “The electronic and print media should encourage mass people to breastfeed their children.”
Health Secretary MM Niazuddin said: “The government hospitals have breastfeeding corners while the private hospitals do not have such arrangements.
The ministry has sent letters to the private hospitals regarding setting up breastfeeding corners."
In 2013, Bangladesh Government came up with a stricter act abolishing the previous ordinance.
This act is entitled “Breast-Milk Substitutes, Baby Foods, Commercially Manufactured Supplementary Baby Foods and Its Equipment (Regulation of Marketing) Act, 2013.” The aim of this act is to protect the children from birth to five years of age.
