The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) authorities have settled a bilateral dispute over hostage exchange, by holding flag meeting on Dharmagar border in Takhurgaon on Thursday afternoon, hours after the BSF and Indian locals picked four Bangladeshis up.
Intelligence Officer Major Tawhid bin Ishaq of BGB 30 Battalion told the Dhaka Tribune: “Earlier in the day, the BSF detained Mohammad Alamgir while he went to cut grass for his cattle from a field near Indian border around 2.30pm. Following the incident, Alamgir's brothers entered inside the Indian territory and caught an Indian man, Sri Suni Ram, of South Dinajpur of India.”
“Later, Suni's brothers entered inside Bangladesh and picked three Bangladeshis up in order to take revenge.”
Major Tawhid further said: “Being informed, we sent a letter to the BSF, asking them to hold a flag meeting in this regard. After the meeting, we have come to a point and exchanged the detainees. The BSF has returned all four Bangladeshis while we have returned Suni.”
“The detained Bangladeshis will be handed over to Ranisonkoil police and the police will fix the next course of action.”
Ranisonkoil police station Officer-in-Charge Sukumar Ray said: “We have received the Bangladeshis from the BGB. After initial interrogations, we let them go home."
