3 ECNEC projects for rural electrification

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved three development projects for rural electrification involving Tk4,717 crore.

The projects aim to supply electricity to every village in the country by 2021, reports BSS.

The ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters after the meeting.

The government is determined to supply electricity to every village in the country by 2021, Kamal said.

A total of 57 Palli Bidyut Samitys (PBS) out of total 72 across the country under Rural Electrification Board (REB) will be engaged with the projects to give 11.50 lakh new connections, he said.

The projects are – Extension of Rural Electrification in Dhaka Division-II, Extension of Rural Electrification in Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions-II and Extension of Rural Electrification in Chittagong and Sylhet Divisions-II.

He said the ECNEC approved another three projects apart from the three electrification projects.

The six development projects would require a total cost of Tk7,839 crore.

"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Tk5,441 crore from the national exchequer while Tk2,397 crore will come as project assistance," he added.

Under the three electrification projects, 26,190 km new transmission line would be installed while 2,810 Km transmission line would be rehabilitated/renovated in the five divisions.

Of the total, 8,940 Km new line and 1,060 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Dhaka division, 7,700 Km new line and 800 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, and 9,550 Km new line and 950 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

REB is entrusted to implement the project by June, 2018, which will cover 43 districts in five divisions.

Officials said the country needs a total of 3,26,263 km transmission line to ensure electric connectivity to every village by 2021.
