SC halts SP in joining service

Update : 15 Jun 2014, 01:14 PM

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has ordered that Superintendent of Police, Habiganj Mostafa Kamal can not be allowed to join service.

The five-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain on Sunday passed the order following a petition that sought stay on the High Court verdict that acquitted the official in a case of demanding bribe.

The apex court said the SP could not be allowed to join service till disposal of the petition.

The lower court had handed 35 years in jail for Mostafa for demanding Tk50 lakh in bribe from the SA Paribahan proprietor in December 2002.

The High Court bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed on June 4 acquitted the convict.

Earlier on January 22, the bench suspended his punishment and granted him bail.

According to the case statement, SA Paribahan owner Salauddin Ahmed and staff members of his office were going to Sylhet by a private car with a bag of Tk20 lakh but a team of Habiganj police halted their car, seized the money and asked them to file a general diary with the local police station asking for security.

But after their arrival at the police station, the then SP Mostafa Kamal ordered for detaining Salauddin and his officials and filing a money laundering case against them.

The SP and Inspector (now retired) Wahid Miah also demanded Tk50 lakh from the SA Paribahan Head Office in exchange for their release.
