Prosecution pleas for further investigation

Update : 03 Jun 2014, 08:05 PM

The prosecution of Bahaddarhat flyover collapse case pleaded before a Chittagong court for further investigation yesterday, expressing discontent over the charge sheet.

Public Prosecutor Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury submitted his discontent plea before the court of Metropolitan Session Judge, SM Mojibur Rahman, claiming that an influential accused had been dropped from the charge sheet, said court sources.

The court set June 18 for the hearing of the petition, said the prosecutor.

The collapse happened on the night of November 24, 2012, killing 12 people and injuring 13 others. Three girder spans 12 and 13 of the under-construction flyover collapsed, due to substandard construction and lack of security measures.

Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad of Chandgaon police station filed a case on November 26 in this regard, against three officials of Chittagong Development Authority, 10 officials of construction companies Mir Akhter and Parisha Trade Systems, and 12 officials of private consultants SRM Associates and DPM Consultants Ltd.

Inspector Rezaul Karim of Chandgaon police station, the investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet on October 24, 2013 before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, implicating only eight people, including the seven accused in the First Information Report.

On March 9, 2014, the court sent the case to the Metropolitan Session Judge Court.

The prosecutor said 18 influential names, including three CDA officials, had been dropped from the charge sheet as the investigation officer did not find any evidence against them during investigation.

It is to be noted that the Bangladesh Army completed the construction work of the flyover after the collapse and it was opened for public on December 31 last year.
