The victims were swept away in storm surges on May 21. Chittagong Water Development Board engineers report that a 60-kilometre stretch of dams in Sandwip, Nwara, Banshkhali, and Patia was damaged by the surge, which saw 7.5m waves flow over their 6.5m high embankments.
