The doctors of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital have called a strike as locals locked into a scaffle with them after a seven-year-old child died for allegedly giving “wrong treatment.”
The deceased Nirob, son of Shahidul Islam, died at the pediatric department of the hospital at 11am, while undergoing treatment.
Witnesses said Nirob was experiencing stomach ache and was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night. He died immediately after being pushed an injection.
The child was diagnosed with brain infection after his admission and the doctors prescribed the patient an injection and pushed the injection under the supervision of Prof Dr Azizul Haque, head of pediatric department, doctors said.
Family members alleged that the boy has been giving wrong treatment.
Following the death, the relatives of the victim vandalised the hospital and put barricade on the Dhaka-Mymensing Highway.
They vandalized a number of vehicles and locked in a scaffle with the doctors.
Officer-in-Charge Fazlul Karim of Kotwali police station said: “Upon information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.”
Later, the intern doctors of the hospital called a strike which has been continuing till filing the report at 5pm.
Dr Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan, secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Mymensingh unit alleged that the “unruly people assaulted the on-duty doctors and nurses at the ward unnecessarily.”
After an emergency meeting, the doctors demanded arrest of the attackers by 11 am tomorrow (May 15). If our demand is not met, we will stage fresh movement,” he added.
“We have decided to observe a token strike from 11am to 1pm tomorrow protesting the attack.”
However, the emergency department will remain opened during the strike.
While contacted, Dr Md Tajul Islam, assistant director of MMCH said: “The normal activities of the hospital will be hampered but the emergency services will be ensured accordingly.”
Additional police have been deployed at the hospital to avert any further untoward situation.
