Train rams bus in capital, 3 killed
At least three people died and 15 others injured when a train rammed into a bus at a rail crossing in the capital's Kamalapur area late on Tuesday night.
Fears were on that the death toll might rise. Authorities said they were not sure if a guard was stationed at the crossing during the time of the crash.
HC butts govt for use of Bangla
The High Court said it observed that the government had little interest in regard to the use of Bangla language in all spheres of the society throughout the country.
The bench directed the government to stop advertisements in English or mixed languages in the media and asked it to come up with explanations by May 15.
Govt withdraws top Narayanganj officials
Several top government officials of Narayanganj were withdrawn late on Tuesday night following a spate of abductions, eight in the last two weeks, through the district.
The district police superintendent, RAB commander and Fatullah and Siddhirganj officers-in-charge were withdrawn. The deputy commissioner was also reportedly withdrawn.
Arms, ammo at Kamalapur railway station
Railway police recovered an AK-22 rifle and huge ammunitions and bomb-making materials abandoned at the Kamalapur Railway Station.
The recovery was made a day after two people were detained along with a US-made automated AK-22 rifle and eight rounds of bullets from an intercity train.
Germany dubious over political stability
A visiting parliamentary delegation of Germany has expressed doubts whether the prevailing political stability can be sustained over the next five years.
The concerns were revealed at a press conference. “We have doubts if the stability can be maintained for five years unless substancial dialogue.”
Legs severed, tendons cut of 2 BCL men
The legs of one and the tendons of another leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League were severed at Rajshahi University. Blames were put on the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
The victims were attending treatments at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Malaysia contracted for 22,000 flats in Dhaka
The government of Malaysia has been contracted for building 22,000 apartments and a flyover in the capital to help Bangladesh government ease Dhaka's housing problems and traffic jam.
The quarters are expected to be complete by 30 months of construction. The housing flats will be constructed in Uttara and Kamrangir Char areas while the 13-kilometre long flyover will connect Shantinagar and the Mawa road in Keraniganj.
Bangladesh-China MoU for Maheshkhali power plant
Bangladesh and China have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to set up a 1320 megawatt coal-based power plant in Maheshkhali of Cox's Bazar by 2019.
Power Development Board Chairman Abduhu Ruhulullah and China Huadian Hongcong Compnay Limited President Zhiao Long Jun signed the deal from the respective sides at Bidyut Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday.
Fresh beach management body
The cabinet directed authorities concerned to ensure proper management of sea beaches in the country by forming a separate committee.
The “Sea Beach Management Committee” will enhance the security in the sea beaches of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Patuakhali districts.
