The Shylet unit of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Unity Council has withdrawn the strike it enforced protesting an attack on an auto-rickshaw worker and police torture of transport workers.
Leaders of the transport workers’ organisation announced the withdrawal of the strike at 4:30pm after a meeting with city Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Zedan Al Musa told the Dhaka Tribune.
He said the organisation issued an ultimatum asking for the arrest of the persons involved in the attack and also asked them to stop the extortion in transport sector. If these demands are not met by April 15th, the strikes will resume.
A pick-up van driver was injured at Lalabazar in Sylhet city on Friday morning.
Protesting the incident, workers put barricade on Lalabazar that triggered a clash between workers and police. Some 10 people including police were injured in the incident.
Later, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Unity Council, Sylhet unit called for an indefinite strike from Saturday, protesting torture inflicted upon them.
