6 MMCH students injured

Six students of the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) have been injured in an attack by local people on Wednesday following the death of an alleged thief inside the college hostel at Baghmara in the town on Tuesday morning.

Of the injured students, four have been admitted to the MMCH, Professor Dr. Motiur Rahman, principal of the hospital, has told the Dhaka Tribune.

Mohaimin Abdullah, a second year student aged 21, has been taken to the intensive care unit of the hospital as he sustained serious injuries in the head during the attack, hospital sources said.

Police said, Dipu, 16, son of late Shahjahan Miah of the town’s Kristapur area allegedly entered into MMCH hostel at Baghmara and when he was fleeing the hostel after committing a theft around 7.30am Tuesday morning, some students of the hostel caught him and beat him up mercilessly, injuring him seriously.

Being informed by MMCH principal Professor Dr. Motiur Rahman, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the body of Dipu who died on the spot, said Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.

Following the death of Dipu, local people started agitations demanding immediate arrest and punishment to the students’ involvement in the killing.

Following the incident, a group of local people attacked six MMCH students at Baghmara with sticks when they were on way to college around 11 am, leaving them injured, said the college principal.

Admitting that the incident was occurred inside the college hostel, the principal said, a meeting of teachers’ council was held at college hall room Wednesday afternoon and a three-member probe body was formed to investigate into the incident.

The body will submit its report within three days, informed the principal.

Meanwhile, the college authority has vacated the Baghmara MMCH hostel to avoid further untoward incident, added college sources.

The college authority also held meetings Wednesday with the local leaders and mayor of Mymensingh Municipality to calm the ongoing situation.

Parveen Akhtar, mother of Dipu filed a case with Kotwali police station Wednesday accusing some 25 unidentified students of the hostel, said police.
