The High Court has asked the government to inform the court whether any investigation body was formed over police firing during the February 2 violence at Rajshahi University.
The court also asked whether any case was filed against the BCL leaders who were seen brandishing firearms on the students of Rajshahi University.
A HC bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Khorshed Alam Sarkar has passed the order following a writ petition.
Deputy Attorney General Alamin Sarkar has been asked to reply the order on behalf of the government by next week.
On February 19, a writ petition was lodged with the High Court, challenging the firing on the students of Rajshahi University on February 2, who launched a peaceful protest against the evening courses.
The plea lodged by Supreme Court lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua, on behalf of a group of human rights activists and public university teachers, sought a rule seeking explanations on why firing by police on the general students that injured many students should not be declared unconstitutional.
The home secretary, inspector general of police, police commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan and officer-in-charge of Motihar police station were made respondents to the plea.
The petition also sought another rule, asking why the respondents should not be directed to submit a report before the High Court explaining the reasons for firing and what procedures they had followed before and after the incident.
It also pleaded for an order on Motihar police station OC to appear in person before the HC to explain his conduct in the incident.
The plea alleged: “As per the law, two reports must be prepared – one brief and another extensive – regarding the use of firearms and send those to the higher authorities. Absence of any such reports renders the police action of firing illegal.”
Earlier on February 11, the lawyer served a legal notice to the respondents seeking explanations for the firing. However, they did not reply, which prompted the human rights activists and university teachers to take the matter to the High Court.
On February 2, police and cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, attacked the agitated students of Rajshahi University during their demonstrations.
Scores of students were injured and 20 were shot in the attack.
