Once again, a minor child has been severely injured when a “red ball-type object” exploded in his left hand, after picking it up from roadside in the capital’s Sutrapur area.
The victim, Mohammad Sourov, 11, a class three student of Rayshahebbazar Government Primary School, was shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) after being rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after the accident yesterday.
“The boy found the ‘toy-like’ object beside the Nobaron Club of Nasiruddin Sardar Lane, when he was playing in the area. The object, which was a crude bomb abandoned by criminals, exploded when he touched it,” Khalilur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur police station, told the Dhaka Tribune.
When asked, the victim’s father Mintu Howlader, who owns a tea-stall in the area, said: “Sourov came back home from school at around 2:00pm. After having launch, he went out to play in the playground at around 4:00pm. Soon after that, we heard a big blast near our house and found that my son’s left hand was drenched in blood.”
“We immediately took him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but on-duty doctors advised us to take him to Nitor, as the blast has broken two of his fingers,” he added.
“The blast has caused a severe injury on Sourov’s palm and shattered two of his fingers, so we referred him to Nitor for specialized treatment after giving primary treatment,” Dr KM Riaz Morshed, residential surgeon of DMCH emergency unit, told the Dhaka Tribune.
This is not the first time that a minor had been injured by an exploding crude bomb abandoned in public places, which most children mistake as a toy.
