The Blackberry service in Bangladesh is going to stop offering their wireless solution from two mobile operators on security concerns as directed by the telecom regulator, officials said.
Market leader Grameenphone has been offering the service from July 2008 and Airtel for last three years.
Officials said, through a letter, Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission requested the two operators to take seven days to switch off the service and find some alternative arrangements to serve their customers.
The letter reads: "As there is no scope to oversee the service through the monitoring gateways, the service should be stopped in the country."
In response, senior executives from the operators said they would seek two more weeks for shifting their services.
Earlier, BTRC had taken initiatives to setup their own switch in Dhaka – initially Blackberry had agreed, but not done it. The non-compliance has facilitated the regulator to go for the decision, officials said.
Blackberry is a wireless solution cannot be overseen by any deceive in Bangladesh. Its main server is in Canada.
Currently, Grameenphone and Airtel have nearly 6,000 Blackberry subscribers, who were more than 9,000 couple of years ago.
