Leaders of Sector Commanders Forum (SCF) have called upon the government to establish separate poling centers for the minority communities during the upcoming upazila polls.
They came up with the call at a press conference held at Liberation War Museum in the city’s Segunbagicha area.
SCF President Air Vice-Marshal (retd) AK Khandker has claimed that the government has failed to organise a successful parliamentary election on January 5.
“Army should be deployed around polling centers with minorities during upazila polls so that the minorities can cast their ballots fearlessly,” he said.
Vice-Chairman Lt Col (retd) M Abu Osman Chowdhury said: “Local administration has failed to resist the attacks due to lack of manpower. A single police station is in charge of seven to eight villages.”
He added: “We cannot trust Jamaat-Shibir men as they couldn’t forget their defeat in 1971. During the war, there were 24% minorities in the country but the number has come down to 9% now.”
The attacks couldn’t have occurred if the village defense team (Gram Protirokka Bahini) performed its duty efficiently. So a special vigilant team should be formed and led by UNO, he went on to say.
The speakers said attacks on minorities were pre-planned political violence. Jamaat-Shibir men want to fulfil their dream of a fundamentalist country by getting rid of all religious minorities.
