At least six people, including a Border Guard Bangladesh trooper, died and several others were injured countrywide during the opposition-called 48-hour blockade Sunday.
Two Awami League leaders in Satkhira, a Jubo Dal leader in Bogra, a BGB man in Comilla, a CNG driver in Feni and a passerby in Sirajganj died on the first day of the blockade.
2 Awami League leader dead in Satkhira
Two Awami League leaders died during clashes between blockade supporters, anti-blockade supporters and law enforcers in Kalaroa upazila on the first day of the 48-hour blockade.
Deara Union Shechwashebak League General Secretary Rabiul Islam, son of Mujibur Rahman, was lynched by Jamaat-e-Islami supporters, police said citing witnesses.
Hours after a Juba League leader was lynched, local Awami League, Juba League and Shechwashebak League activists went berserk in the area.
Kalaroa police Officer-in-Charge Shahdara said Awami League vandalisd some establishments in the area belonging to Jamaat supporters.
Later, Rabiul was dragged from his home and lynched by Jamaat supporters around 5pm, the OC said. Law enforcers found the body later.
Earlier, Deyara Union Jubo League General Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Babu, 30, was lynched by Shibir activists according to police.
Satkhira police Additional Superintendent Joydeb Chowdhury confirmed Babu's death and later said police and BGB were deployed in the area to avoid further untoward incident.
Passerby dead in Sirajganj
Sakman Hossain, 30, a mason by profession, died during a clash between blockade supporters and law enforcers in Jogai area of Sadar upazila in the morning.
Sirajganj Sadar police OC Habibul Islam confirmed the death.
Witnesses said the police obstructed the opposition activists when they blockaded a road at around 8:30.
Meanwhile, the blockade supporters were locked in a clash with police when the law enforcers detained district BNP Organising Secretary Nur Kayem Sabuj.
Police launched teargas shells to disperse the activists leaving passerby Sakman injured. He jumped into a nearby pond in a bid to get away from police during the clash.
Later, local people rescued him and rushed him to Sirajganj sadar hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.
Asked about the cause of death, Habibul Islam said: “Police fired teargas shells to try and bring the situation under control. We do not know whether Sakman was injured by these tear gas shells.”
Police open fire in Bogra, Jubo Dal leader dead
A Jubo Dal leader died during clashes between blockade supporters and law enforcers in Bogra’s Shahjahanpur Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was one Mohammad Yousuf, an organising secretary of the ward 21 Jubo Dal.
Bogra police Additional Superintendent Gazipur Rahman confirmed the death.
Opposition activists gathered in Bananai Lichutala area around afternoon to form a blockade, he said. They began hurling brickbats and crude bombs when police intervened.
Police opened fire to bring the situation under control, the ASP said. The body was found after the area cooled down.
It was not immediately clear how many other people were injured at the scene.
Local BNP called a daylong hartal in Bogra for Wednesday in protest of the death.
BGB man killed in renewed Comilla clash
A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was killed and 10 others were injured in a fresh clash between activists of the 18-party alliance and law enforcers in the city’s Taltala area on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.
The deceased was one Ripon, 25. Other details of the deceased could not be known yet.
Police said BGB troops were deployed in the city following the death of a rickshaw-puller who was killed during a clash between cops and supporters of 18-party.
The 18-party activists were locked into a fresh clash with the BGB members while picketing in support of the blockade programme at Charta Taltala area around 4:45pm, leaving Ripon critically injured.
Later, he died on the way to Comilla Medical College Hospital. Witnesses said Ripon was hit by a bullet in the head.
CNG driver dead in Feni
A CNG-driven auto-rickshaw driver died attacked by picekts in Feni Sadar in the evening, police said.
Dulal, 40, son of Abdul Bari from Daganbhuiyan, was hit by a stone hurled by picketers on Feni turn road near Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 8:30pm, witnesses said.
He succumbed to his injuries while on the way to Feni Sadar Hospital.
Feni Model police OC Moazzem Hossain confirmed that the death caused during attack of picketers.
