Employees of mobile phone operator Banglalink staged a sit-in programme in front of the company’s head office in the capital’s Gulshan area on Thursday morning, demanding regularisation of their job and wage hikes.
A total of 96 employees of Banglalink’s Maintenance and Operation Section took to the street around 11am to press home their various demands, reports our correspondent.
Sources said around 110 people were working in the maintenance section since 2005 but are yet to get the status of permanent workers and their salaries have not been increased in the last seven years.
Of the agitating staff members, 45 filed a case against the company with the labour court on August 4 this year, said an employee.
Wishing to remain anonymous, a Banglalink official said the authorities have held a number of meetings with the demonstrating employees in order to come to a consensus, but failed.
The angry employees alleged that the Banglalink authorities have threatened to file false criminal cases against the employees if they do not withdraw their case.
Banglalink authorities denied those allegations, telling the Dhaka Tribune that they have already taken initiatives to make the workers permanent and raise their salaries.
The company authorities alleged that the employees are staging demonstrations in order to press home their additional demands which they consider to be illogical.
