Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday told the House the killings on the Indo-Bangla border had declined because of her government’s diplomatic initiative.
The main opposition and its allies attribute the border killings by the Indian Border Security Force to the Awami League’s “week” foreign policy.
Hasina countered the claim during her scheduled question-answer session in parliament.
“Because of our government’s strong stance on the BSF killings on Bangladesh border, India has assured us that the killing would be reduced to zero. Already, the border killings have been reduced significantly,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said her government had signed 30 bilateral protocols since it took office in January 2009.
“With the signing of the extradition treaty in January, the cooperation in the field of security between the two countries has been widened,” she said, replying to a question from Awami League lawmaker Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury from Chittagong.
Answering to another question from Ashrafunnessa Mosharraf of the ruling party, the premier said the government had been trying cordially to establish the rule of law and institutionalise an independent judiciary.
“The government does not intervene in the freedom of the judiciary. Rather, financial freedom of the Supreme Court has been guaranteed,” she said.
