Update : 30 Aug 2016, 12:22 PM

He made the statement in a press conference held immediately after the Appellate Division gave its judgement on Tuesday morning.

The attorney general said: “The Supreme Court's decision is a big relief. It has fulfilled the nation's hope. “The full text of review judgement will be released very soon. Now there is no legal bar to execute the death sentence.” Mahbubey Alam also said Mir Quasem will be asked if he wants to seek presidential mercy. “If he seeks mercy admitting his guilt, then the process of execution process will be halted till the president gives his decision. If he does not seek mercy or the president rejects it, then the government will fix the date and time of execution.” Earlier in the day, a five-member Appellate Division panel of the Supreme Court upheld death sentence for Mir Quasem Ali for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. The panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha gave the judgement rejecting Mir Quasem’s appeal to review his death penalty.
