At least 20 people, including a policeman, were injured after cricket fans went on a rampage butting heads with police at the city's Chashara on Friday, after failing to collect tickets for the Bangladesh-New Zealand game, reports UNB.
Police said several cricket fans staged a demonstration on Bangabandhu Road, in Chashara area, when the guards of United Commercial Bank (UCB) Narayanganj branch told them that the tickets for the third one-day match between Bangladesh and New Zealand would be sold on Saturday, instead of that day.
Failing to avail tickets, the agitated cricket fans hurled brick chips at the bank's office and vandalised some 15-20 vehicles passing through the area.
When police, upon being informed, arrived at the scene and tried to disperse them, a chase and counter-chase initiated, triggering a clash that left 20 people injured.
Police fired several gunshots in an attempt to bring the situation under control while traffic on the busy road came to a halt for one hour following the incident. Manjur Quader, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, said the enraged fans had started queueing under the UCB bank building since morning, getting incensed when they learned about tickets for the Bangladesh-New Zealand 3rd ODI cricket match would be sold on the day before the match.
A police constable was injured in the clash with the cricket fans, added the OC, arresting nine people from the scene.
