Update : 30 Oct 2013, 08:28 PM

At least six crude bombs were detonated by Jamaat-Shibir men at the port city’s Rahattapul area yesterday afternoon, said police.

So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the blasts.

Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakalia police station, said some 15 to 20 Jamaat-Shibir activists, chanting anti-government slogans, brought out a brisk procession at the area around 1:30pm and detonated the bombs.

Later, police rushed to the spot while the Jamaat-Shibir men managed to flee, said the OC.

The explosion caused panic among pedestrians and locals who ran helter-skelter after the incident, added the police official.

Earlier on Tuesday, two crude bombs were also detonated near the residence of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Mannan of Chittagong at DC Hill of the port city. The deputy commissioner was holding a meeting with two additional deputy commissioners at his house during the blast.

Following the incident, security has been intensified in the DC Hill area, said Mirza Saiem Mahmud, assistant commissioner of the Kotwali circle of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

None were arrested in this regard.

Meanwhile, security is being beefed-up across the port city to evade untoward or subversive incidents, said Banaz Kumar Majumder, additional commissioner (crime and operation) of CMP.
