An exhibition titled “When Silence Eats Sound,” portraying the works of two lively young artists was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Bengal Art Lounge. The exhibition is a treat for art connoisseurs of the city as it offers a multidimensional view of nature, captured brilliantly on canvas.
What sets the duo apart from other artists is that, they both reside outside the city, where they are closer to nature, an aspect that is reflected quite visibly in their art pieces. Mozai Zeevan Safori is from Jessore and Majumder is from Narail. Both the artists had completed their BA from Khulna Art College on drawing and painting.
A total of 55 artworks are on display that showcases 21 works of Majumder and 32 artworks of Zeevan and two unique pieces that are done by both the artists together. The display portrays the diverse philosophy of both the artists and their uptake on life, nature and the rural lifestyle. All the artworks are done using varying mediums, such as oil, acrylic, and pen on canvas, pen on paper, ink brush, paper collage, wood sculpture and many more. The exhibition is on till November 13.
About the title of the exhibition and the artists, the manager of the gallery said: “The title of the show is a simplified variation on a quote by the Baul mystic and philosopher Lalon. When silence engulfs sound, this one phrase describes the absolute moment of predestined elimination, when silence like a black hole consumes everything within itself. In the same way that white is composed of all the colours of the spectrum, silence comprises of all existing sound.
By interpreting the translation of the phrase we wanted to communicate the playfulness and primitive style of the works, which stands in contrast to their deeply philosophical subject matter.
Both Mozai Zeevan Safori and Samir Mojumder present contradictory sets of works, on one hand you have elaborate drawings, detailed and skillful, and on the other you have works that are childlike and naive. It is a constant back and forth between folk art and figurative art.”
The style of Zeevan’s artworks is pessimistic in nature and can be interpreted as satiric. His figurative images have a primitive style. About his artworks, the artist states: “My works portray beauty with a twist, as it incorporates sorrow, hardship and all the other sufferings that are present in a society.” The artist has also shown the nature of people, who likes to criticise others in a sarcastic manner, in his artworks.
Majumder is the protégée of SM Sultan. His artworks identify the rural elements of Bangladesh. About his artworks, the artist said: “I am mesmerised by the beauty of nature and everything in it. Most of my works display my understanding and view of the exquisiteness of nature. Basically, when one sees my artwork, it enables them to observe nature through my eyes.” Majumder’s paintings show that he takes pride of the tradition of Bangladesh.
