Update : 29 Oct 2013, 06:29 PM

Home Minister MK Alamgir on Wednesday urged all to keep garment sector from all kinds of subversive activities as it contributes a lot to the national economy.

“We should keep away the readymade garment sector from any kinds of subversive activities as the sector has a great contribution to our economy,” he told a certificate awarding ceremony in Dhaka.

He said the RMG sector has contributed to reach the country’s per capita income to US$1,044 with its extra ordinary contribution.

Fire service and Civil Defense Department and the BGMEA jointly organised the programme on completion of a training session on fire safety.

A total of 35 BGMEA recruited officials were given a month long training on “fire fighting, search, rescue and first aid” by Fire Service and Civil Defense so that they can latter train the mid-level management and workers of the garment factories in the country.

Safety in RMG industry has become the key issue in the recent times due to some untoward incidents like Rana Plaza collapse and Tazreen Fashion fire incident, said BGMEA President Atiqul Islam. “Rana Plaza collapse” is a wakeup call for us, he added.

Currently, the prime task of the RMG sector is to make the sector full-fledge compliant and to ensure fire and building safety in each factory, said Atiqul, adding that the BGMEA has taken necessary steps with the help of government, Accord, Alliance, ILO and Fire and Civil Defense.

Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar, Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed, Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defense Md Ali Ahmed Khan and BGMEA President Atiqul Islam, among others, were present.
