President Abdul Hamid offered his Eid-ul-Azha prayers along with hundreds of people from all walks of life on the National Eidgah Maidan in the city at 8:30 this morning.
Ministers, state ministers, advisors to the Prime Minister, judges of the Supreme Court, members of parliament, senior political leaders, diplomats of different Muslim countries and high civil and military officials also offered prayers at the main Eid jamaat (congregation) in the capital.
Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Hafez Mufti Muhibullahil Baki Nadvi conducted the Eid prayers. A special munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for peace and development of the country, welfare of the people and greater unity of the Muslim Ummah.
President Abdul Hamid exchanged Eid greetings with the musallis after the prayers. Before staring the prayers, Baitul Mukarram Imam explained the essence of Eid-ul-Azha terming it as a symbol of sacrifice.
Noting that Islam is the religion of peace and tolerance, he urged all to show respect to believers in other faiths side by side with protecting their rights and rituals.
The Eid jamaat was held under the auspices of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) south.
Special arrangements were also made for women and foreign diplomats to offer their Eid prayers on the National Eidgah.
The DCC arranged drinking water and mobile toilets for the devotees at the venue.
Different law enforcement agencies, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the elite force RAB, provided a foolproof security to the areas around the Eidgah Maidan.
