Airtel starts 3G test run

Update : 02 Oct 2013, 06:16 PM

Airtel, the fourth largest mobile phone operator, has launched the test run of its 3G service at its corporate head office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

It is available in Banani and Gulshan 2 areas from today on test basis for the customers, a top executive said.

Telecom Minister Shahara Khatun inaugurated the test run by making a video call to a student on the other side.

“I’m very hopeful that Airtel Bangladesh will bring in their global expertise to the 3G world of Bangladesh and provide state of the art services to its customers,” she said.

In the last week, Banglalink, Robi and Grameenphone inaugurated their 3G networks also on test basis. All the operators are now waiting for the approval to the tariff plans from the telecom regulator. They will then go for commercial launch.

Sunil Kanti Bose, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, requested Airtel to provide quality service at affordable price so the users do not complain against the operator.

Airtel demonstrated the 3G service by downloading large files and application in high speed video streaming.

Abubakar Siddique, telecom secretary, said there were some unresolved issues like tax, but the finance ministry, telecom ministry, tax administrator and BTRC officials came to a consensus to solve the issues within a short period of time.

Chris Tobit, chief executive officer of Airtel, said: “The services offered are youth centric and also attractive to corporate Bangladesh, focusing heavily on entertainment, infotainment, edutainment, m-commerce, m-health etc.”
