The government has claimed that a section of people and organisations are spreading propaganda against the Rampal power plant project, to be set up in the Sundarbans area.
The Ministry of Information said so in a press note on Thursday.
The press note reads: the government has planned to set up a 1,320MW coal-based power plant at Rampal. The power plant is located at a safe distance of 14km from the Sundarbans and 72km from the UN-declared National Heritage site.
A super critical method based on ultra-modern technology coupled with high quality imported coal which will be used to generate power in the plant.
The emissions of carbon, sulphur, fly ash and several other sorts of air pollution will be kept at a minimum level to avoid having any adverse impact on the environment.
The proposed Rampal plant will be implemented following the advices given by the Directorate of Environment for approval of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report.
Establishment of the plant will significantly develop the economy of the area. It will also reduce locals’ dependency on natural resources of the Sundarbans to earn their living.
The Power Division secretary said under the power sector master plan, the government would be required to produce 24,000MW of electricity by 2021 and 40,000MW by 2030.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the first 1,320MW project implemented by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company on October 22.
