Prince Karim Aga Khan is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Monday on a two-day trip, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
It is expected that an “extended protocol” would be signed during his trip to expand operations of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), she said.
An official from the ministry said the AKDN was working under a protocol signed in 1993 but that it had limited scope.
“After signing of the extended protocol, the Aga Khan Development Network can expand its operation to the field of its choice,” he said.
The AKDN would set up its office under the extended protocol, he added. The AK Fund for Economic Development, a wing of the AKDN, has investments in the Industrial Promotion and Development Company (IPDC) and other institutions but it may bring more investment to Bangladesh through the new protocol.
The official said the AK Education Service set up Aga Khan School in 1988 and it had plans to set up an AK Academy in Bashundhara. During his last visit in 2008, Prince Aga Khan laid the foundation stone of the academy.
Aga Khan became the Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims on July 11, 1957 at the age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan. This will be his seventh visit to Dhaka.
