NBR eyes Tk11bn from income tax fair 2013

Update : 08 Sep 2013, 07:23 PM

National Board of Revenue has set a target of Tk11bn revenue from the weeklong income tax fair, scheduled to begin on September 16.

“We set the target for the fair … it would help widen the tax net as well as ensure increased revenue collection,” Chairman Ghulam Hossain told a press briefing at the NBR headquarters in Dhaka yesterday. He said it event is to provide tax education and create awareness.

The nationwide fair will be held for two days simultaneously in all the 64 district headquarters for the first time while the divisional headquarters will observe it for seven days.

“The fair would help face the challenge of achieving the revenue target of Tk1.36tn for the FY2013-14,” said the chairman.

In response to a question whether the political atmosphere would have negative impact on the revenue collection, he said that they would work on ensuring the revenue collection.

Giving an update on the progress of Electronic Taxpayers Identification Number (E-TIN), he said the newly introduced system, from its launching on July 1, received a total of 218,000 registrations, including 53,000 new entrants.

The theme of the income tax fair 2013 will be “Internet TIN Registration Absolutely Easy.”

Finance Minister AMA Muhith is likely to inaugurate the fair on September 16 at the Officers Club premises in Dhaka.

There will be booths of Sonali Bank and Janata Bank to facilitate tax-related transactions and some booths will also be set up to facilitate visitors on registration of E-TIN service.

On the income tax day, the revenue body will award five top taxpayers from each district and five top taxpayers from each city corporation for their contribution to the national exchequer.

For the tax card award, the revenue body also made an initial list of 40 entrepreneurs considering their contribution to the national exchequer in the financial years 2010-11 and 2011-12. Among them, 10 individuals and 10 corporate taxpayers will be awarded for each year.

The fair will remain open for visitors from 10am to 6pm. The visitors would be offered to get the electronic TIN registration instantly.

Last year, the revenue body collected Tk8.39bn in income tax from the fair. A total of 347,523 people received services from the fair and the board had received tax returns from around 100,000 taxpayers. Fresh TIN was issued to 16,402 people.
