Unit-1 of the 1320 MW Payra Thermal Power Plant at Kalapara in Patuakhali has resumed production after a week-long shutdown.
After the unit resumed power production on Monday evening, all of 1320 MW is now being supplied to the national grid.
Earlier, on June 24 at around 4pm, the authorities stopped the power generation of one of the plant's two 660 MW units for purposes of maintenance.
As Unit-1 of this plant is now operational, load shedding in the southern region can be significantly reduced, said Payra Thermal Power Plant Supervising Engineer Shah Abdul Haseeb.
He also said, "We were supposed to relaunch Unit-1 on July 4. However, considering the overall power supply situation in the country, our officers and employees worked day and night and managed to generate electricity from Unit-1 by 4:30 pm on Monday. We are currently supplying a total of 1320 MW of electricity to the national grid."
In 2013, the Payra Thermal Power Plant was constructed by acquiring 1,002 acres of land in Nishanbaria village of Dhankhali union in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.
Two units of 660 MW each have been commissioned there through joint investment of the Bangladesh-China Power Company Limited (BCPCL). The plant has been supplying electricity to the national grid since 2020.
