NU students block Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway

Update : 21 Jul 2013, 09:49 AM

National University students blocked the busy Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in front of the university on Sunday, demanding cancellation of the newly introduced grading system on its examinations, reports UNB.

Witnesses said students who did not pass the honours first-year final exams (2010–11 session) under the new grading system blocked the highway around 11am following a futile meeting with university authorities.

Students from different colleges, including Tongi and Vaowal College in the district, sat with university authorities in the morning seeking reevaluation of their results.

Since university authorities did not consider their demand, the students formed a human chain on the NU campus and blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, torching tires and creating severe traffic congestion.

They also vandalised a number of vehicles on the highway.

Police tried to disperse them by charging batons. A clash between law enforcement and the students broke out in the area, leaving five students injured.

Later, traffic on the highway returned to normal at about 1pm after police brought the situation under control.

Contacted, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Dr Munaz Ahmed Noor said the grading system could not be cancelled as it was a globally practiced system.
