The newly formed Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) has been facing some acute problems – poor communication system, shortage of electricity and gas, poor drainage system and water clogging – that have become the talk of the table ahead of the GCC poll, scheduled to be held on July 6.
Ahead of the poll, the voters are expected to vote for the candidate who will give more priority in solving these problems.
Locals alleged that the communication system of the city corporation was at its worst condition. One Sharif Hossain, a shopkeeper of the Palerpara area said: “When it rains, water clogging makes it almost impossible to use the roads on foot with shoes on, and children and young women sufferer the most because of this situation.”
Around 3km of muddy road of ward 16 has made the daily lives of the ward’s inhabitants awful and irritating. Apart from that, shortage of gas and load shedding add to the people’s suffering, making their lives miserable.
The Gachha, Mudipara and Holudpur areas have almost 10km of muddy roads that become totally unusable after a little rain, locals alleged.
Meanwhile, traffic congestion is a common occurrence at the Gazipur rail gate, Gazipur intersection and Tongi, while there is no proper drainage system for the Dhaka-Mymensingh it leads to the roads getting muddy during the rainy season.
On the other hand, Residents of Tongi, Joydebpur and Gazipur Sadar are among the worst sufferers of the gas and electricity crises.
Hasmot Ali, an elderly person of Gachha, alleged that he had not seen any development of Gachha for last 60 years, and added: “We will cast our votes for such a candidate who will provide gas connections to the people and develop the poor communication system of the area.”
As part of the election campaign, Awami League backed candidate Azmat Ullah Khan has been seeking votes by pledging to improve the poor drainage system of the city corporation.
