Update : 20 Jun 2013, 03:34 PM

A leader of the ruling Awami League (AL) was killed at Dakshin Mohadebpur area under Sitakund of the district earlier yesterday, which led to protests by the AL supporters in the morning, blocking the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and vandalising at least 10 vehicles.

The dead, Mohiuddin Shohel, 42, was indiscriminately lacerated by unidentified criminals, which left him critically injured, eventually leading to his death. He was the vice president of the municipal unit of AL and a resident of Bhuyan Para area in Daksin Mohadebpur.

Samiul Alam, officer-in-charge of the Sitakund police station, said miscreants attacked Shohel near his residence at around 2am while he was returning home, leaving him in a critical condition. He was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex by the locals and was later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.

The OC said that they have initiated a drive to arrest the criminals involved with the killing.

Majibul Hoque Khandakar, vice president of the upazila’s AL unit, said he had no idea about the killers’ identities when asked about possible suspects. He demanded their immediate arrest and a proper investigation of the case.

Meanwhile, several hundred activists of the ruling party thronged at the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at about 11am, creating a blockade at the Uttar Bypass area suspending any vehicular movement.

Aminul Islam, inspector in-charge of investigations of Sitakunda police station, said that the agitated activists vandalised at least 10 different kinds of vehicles during the demonstration and were engaged in a violent tug-of-war with the police.

He said that they [the police] dispersed the agitated protesters by firing blank shots. Vehicular movement was restored after two hours following the removal of the barricade, he added.
