Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has provided financial assistance to the small businessmen who faced damage due to arson and vandalism during Hefazat-e Islam’s siege of Dhaka on May 5.
Chaos unfolded at Baitul Muqarram , Paltan and Gulistan areas during Hefazat’s rally at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar. The businesses in the areas and on the pavements were vandalised and torched.
A total of 3,033 affected small businessmen have been given Tk 50,000 each as a support to restart their businesses, reports UNB.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a programme held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday advised BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to return to peaceful means by refraining from destructive politics.
The businessmen who used to sell copies of Quran and Hadith at the national mosque Baitul Mukarram’s south gate received aid from the Prime Minister.
They are – Nurul Amin, SiddiqurRahman, MizanurRahman, Mohammad Ali, Abdul Kader and other businessmen from the nearby area Abdul Matin, Abdul Kader, Mohammad Alam, Nazrul Islam and GiasUddin.
The Prime Minister termed the burning of Quran on May 5 as “inhumane” saying: “I donot have words to say anything over the incident. I donot know if something like this ever happened anywhere else.”
To the traders she said: “It is not possible to compensate the loss you have faced.”
About the daylong violence on Hefazat’s Dhaka siege on May 5 she said: “What Hefazat-e Islam and Jamaat-e-Islam did with the support of Khaleda Zia – goes beyond words of criticism.”
